The department was started in 1974.The department offers an Honours course, Generic Electives and Value Added courses. Since 2019, the department also offers BA Programme in Sociology. It trains students to develop a 'sociological imagination' and to make connections between the private and the public domain. The department has consistently been producing two or three University rank holders from each class every year.The department has a very strong tradition of undergraduate research. All the students in each year do projects based on primary research. In the fourth semester the students make ethnographic films. The BA programme students too do projects as well films. Special lectures and wiorkshops are organised inhouse as well as with industry experts to teach them various research techniques.Academic reading and writing workshops are also organised to hone their acadenmic writing skills. The outcome is published in a Research Compendium. The deapartment has two journals - The Lighthouse curated and edited by the BA honours students and Social Vibgyor curated and ediuted by BA Programme students with the help of faculty advisors. The students are also encouraged to do internships while still in college. Regular interactive sessions are organised with NGOs, various organisations and alumni for counseeling and internships. The department has a very strong social media presence where such opportunities are also shared. The social media platforms also include podcasts and discussion forums. We follow a 360 degree pedagogical approach. The chalk and talk method of teaching is complemented with seminars, workshops and intercative sessions with experts.
Equipped with these skills our students move on to successful postgraduate programmes such as sociology, social work, mass communication, management, fim studies, development studies, journalism, civil services and law in the best universities all over the world. Our students find placement in diverse fields such as the media, publishing houses, the corporate sector, the public sector, NGOs (national and international), research, and many other sectors related to development. The students of the Department have represented India at International Youth Exchange Forums, World Youth Forum and as UN volunteers.
